MSLTA Activity Report 2019-2020
It gives me pleasure to present the Secretary’s Report for the year 2019-2020.
- TATA Open Maharashtra ATP 250 World Tour Championship 2020 , Mhalunge Balewadi Sports Complex , Pune
The third edition of the TATA Open Maharashtra was organized by the MSLTA under the guidance and support of the government of Maharashtra, the event was a huge success and the response of the officials, players and all stakeholders was overwhelming.
A galaxy of World ranked players and Dignitaries across political lines came to witness the event which was won by Jiri Vesely from Czech Republic who defeated Egor Gerasimov from Belarus in three sets 7-6 (7-2), 5-7, 6-3 in an entertaining final held at the Mhalunge Balewadi Stadium here in Pune.
A big thanks to our Vice President Prashant Sutar for his efforts of getting the government support for the tie without which such grandeur and splendor for the tie would not have been possible , also a big thanks to TATA Group for their sponsorship
- Record Number of Tournaments
MSLTA has conducted over 144 tournaments from April 2019 – March 2020 which consisted of 10 International tournaments (which include Tata Open ATP 250, , 1 KPIT ATP Challenger, 4 $25K ITF Women’s, 1 ITF Juniors and 2 Asian Tournament), 99 AITA ranked events (which included 3 Nationals [Under 12,14,16], 5 National Series tournaments, 9 Super Series, 38 Championship Series, 28 Talent Series) 12 Men & Women National ranking Tournaments, 34 Under 10 State Ranking events along with 3 MSLTA Masters (under 10, 12 and 14) 2 Maharashtra state Ranking Veterans Tournament, 2 MSLTA Junior tennis league (Mumbai and Pune), Mumbai Open Interclub Championship, Road to MSLTA events at the district level and 2 Training Camps for various age group players.
While Mumbai region hosted 43 events including 1 international event, Pune Region Hosted 24 events which included 7 International events the highest in the country, Kolhapur region hosted 25 events, Navi Mumbai hosted 8 events including 1 international event, Nagpur region hosted 13 events, Aurangabad region 15 events, Solapur region 6 events including 1 international event and Nashik region 10 events. The record number of tennis events at all levels are proving to be great motivator for the growth of tennis in the state.
A big thanks to our Vice president Kishor Patil for supporting the KPIT- ATP Challenger for six years in a row and also to all the affiliated clubs for hosting international and national events .
Maharashtra players Performances at National Tournaments
The Annual Rankings and the performances of players at the National level have shown drastic increase which is fruit of well planned and executed events by our association and the affiliate clubs and Gymkhana. In 2019 4 players finishing either winners or runners-up in National tournaments, it is also a matter of pride for us that 8 players were ranked in top 5 in India out of 8 age groups.
This success has not been achieved overnight but is fruits of almost decade long structured planning; it is not about just sponsorship or monetary rewards but MSLTA’s involvement that goes beyond that to specialized training and unique initiatives
- Player Achievements
Our emphasis to grow tennis at the grass roots with focus on our junior players is bearing fruits , it gives immense me pleasure that it has been great contribution and team work shown by the entire tennis fraternity across the state .
Rutuja Bhosale was honored with the coveted Shiv Chatrapati award by the Government of Maharashtra.
Nitten Kirrtane has been awarded the prestigious Dhyan Chand Award instituted by the Government of India.
MSLTA Player Performances:
With Major international events conducted by MSLTA We have been able to give wildcards to our players at these major events hoping that the same may change their fortunes and wishing they make the best of the opportunity. On the player’s front Maharashtra Tennis players to keep making us proud
Manas Dhamne : won the EDDIE HERR ITF U-12 boys single title in Florida, USA, he also won the Asian under-14 tennis at the Sports Boulevard Asian under-14 tennis tournament held at the DLTA Complex. He was also selected for AITA trust Camp in Delhi for a scholarship of Rs. 100,000 each per year.
Arjun Kadhe : lifted the men’s doubles trophy at the ATP Challenger in Chengdu, China. Arjun also finished doubles runner-up at the KPIT MSLTA Challenger
Mahak Jain : won the 15K Kenya ITF women’s championship in Nairobi
Siddharth Marathe Wild card Siddharth Marathe won the boys title at the Asian under-14 tennis tournament at the VAN Sports Club in Baliawas.
Ruma Gaikwari: Selected for AITA trust Camp in Delhi for a scholarship of Rs. 100,000 each per year

- Road to MSLTA Tennis Training Camp held in Nanded
Nanded: A total 100 tennis players from Aurangabad, Solapur, Kolhapur, Nagpur, Yavatmal, Nashik are participated at Under 10 and 12 Road to MSLTA Tennis Training Camp which is being organized by Nanded District & Lawn Tennis Association held at Nanded.
- MSLTA Organized National Officiating School in Pune
MSLTA in collaboration with International Tennis Federation (ITF) and All India Tennis Association (AITA) organized an ITF National Officiating School at PYC Hindu Gymkhana,Pune. The school was conducted by ITF Gold Badge Referees, Mr. Nitin Kannamwar & Mrs. Sheetal Iyer. Participants were awarded the National Level officiate certificates
- MSLTA Supervisor Refresher course
MSLTA conducted a Supervisor Refresher Workshop to keep its supervisor updated with the new rules and regulations and also to give a feel and make them understand the entry procedure of the new MSLTA website. This is part of the ongoing training and education programme initiated by MSLTA for its officials. . 17 supervisors, Asst supervisors from all over Maharashtra attended the workshop conducted by ITF Gold Badge referee Mrs. Sheetal Iyer at the PYC Hindu Gymkhana, Pune.

Howling Wolves lift 4th MSLTA – Mumbai Open – Junior Tennis League 2019
Howling Wolves edged out Rising Eagles by a solitary game 121-119 to emerge winners at the 4th MSLTA – Mumbai Open – Junior Tennis League 2019 organized by Maharashtra State Lawn Tennis Association (MSLTA) and played at Dr.G.A. Ranade Tennis Centre in Mumbai.
Vepar Speeding Cheetahs lift PMDTA Junior Tennis League Title by a solitary game
Vepar Speeding Cheetahs edged out Kodre Farms Roaring Lions by a solitary game 40-39 to emerge winners at the PMDTA Junior Tennis League organized by Pune Metropolitan District Tennis Association (PMDTA) and played at the PYC Hindu Gymkhana and Deccan Gymkhana Tennis courts.
Kolhapur Junior Tennis League
After Pune and Mumbai, Kolhapur was the first zone to organize Junior Tennis League. Total 86 players from the Kolhapur zone comprising Kolhapur, Sangli, Ichalkaranji, Satara, Phaltan represented in 6 teams at the Kolhapur Junior tennis at the Krida Sankul MSLTA tennis complex at Kolhapur
- MSLTA Senior Circuit
We at MSLTA believe that Tennis has no age and every player young or old should get an opportunity to play, with this is in mind we have launched a Senior Circuit for 35+, 45+,55+ , 65+ players comprising 10 events and 1 Masters which will be conducted across the state and the smaller centers.
First ever Senior Women’s Event
MSLTA also took lead to conduct the first every senior women’s event, the event was hosted by our affiliate Wodehouse Gymkhana, more than 100 women from all over India in the age group of 35+ participated in the event.
- MSLTA ITF Women’s Wildcard Selection Tournament
MSLTA conducted first ITF Womens Wildcard Selection Tournament for state girls ages 15 and above at Pune from 15th – 17th November 2019. Winners were given wildcards at ITF Women’s events conducted in Maharashtra

- MSLTA Masters Tennis Tournament 2019
MSLTA Masters Tournament was conducted in 3 different region Under 10 event in Kolhapur Sport Association, Kolhapur Under 12 event in MSLTA Tennis Center, Solapur and Under 14 event in MSLTA, Mumbai from 26th December – 27th December 2019. Winners received Rs. 10,000 and 150 MSLTA points, 2nd position received Rs. 8,000 and 100 MSLTA points, 3rd position received Rs. 6,000 and 75 MSLTA points while 4th position received Rs. 4,000 and 75 MSLTA points.
- MSLTA Annual Scholarship 2019 – 2020
MSLTA hosted the Annual Scholarship programme 36 Top tennis players from Maharashtra were awarded the annual MSLTA Annual Scholarship of, top performing players in 2019 -20 . The top 3 players in each age group in the state were awarded scholarships worth over Rs. 12,00,000 apart from the awards the players will also be given funds for international training. Appreciation Awards were presented to Pune Metropolitan District Tennis Association, Pune, Cricket Club of India, Mumbai, Deccan Gymkhana, Pune, Solapur District Lawn Tennis Association, Solapur and Navi Mumbai Sports Association, Navi Mumbai, Navnath Shete Sports Academy, Pune. Special Awards were presented to Coaches Hemant Bendrey and Alon Moses for producing National Champions and Aditya Madkekar for producing National Runner-up from Maharashtra.

Maharashtra boasts of maximum number of International Tennis officials which include 2 Gold Badge, 3 Bronze Batch, 1 Silver Batch Chief of Official, 1 Chief of Official , 4 ITF White Badge Referees, 6 ITF White Batch officials and 32 National Supervisors.

Maharashtra has 500 AITA registered coaches include 4 Level 7 . 21 Level 5 , 65 Level 4 and 410 Level 3 Coaches .
Other Ongoing MSLTA Initiatives
- MSLTA App and Online entry System has become popular with over 2000 registrations.
- New Website which is vibrant and covers all news, currently it has over 5, 00,000 hits.
- Use of Social Media like Twitter and Facebook for tournaments and player promotions.
- Vision programme which supporting 124 players in all age groups
- Continuing Education and Courses for Tribal Coaches and Candidates at Nagpur.
- Racquet Library with a view of donating racquets to players across the state and new district centers to make tennis more affordable to newcomers
- Financial Help for conduct of National and International events in Maharashtra.
