Kanika Vaidya, Dhruthi Venugopal in semifinals

Kanika Vaidya sustained her good work and beat fifth seed Freya Christie of Britain 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 in the quarterfinals of the $15,000 ITF women’s tennis tournament at the Arera Club courts on Thursday.

The 22-year-old Kanika, who had earlier beaten the top seed Ana Veselinovic of Montenegro, will play another Britain, seventh seed Emily Webley-Smith. Interestingly, Emily also bounced back from a slow start to tame fourth seed Bunyawi Thamchaiwat of Thailand in three sets.

Dhruthi Venugopal was equally energetic in continuing with her fine run as she outsmarted national champion Riya Bhatia in a second set tie-break.

In the semifinals, Dhruthi will play second seed Tereza Mihalikova of Sllovakia who stopped Prerna Bhambri for the loss of five games.

It was another memorable finish for Kanika, as she made the doubles final in partnership with Rosalie Van Der Hoek of Netherlands, beating Emily and Pranjala Yadlapalli 10-7 in the super tie-break.
