Yuki returns to winning ways; N Prashant, Sumit has it easy at KPIT -MSLTA ATP Challenger  2017

Pune, Nov 14: Third seeded Yuki Bhambri led the way along with N Vijay Sunder Prashant and Sumit Nagal into the second round of the main draw of the $50000 + Hospitality KPIT MSLTA ATP Challenger, at the Mhalunge-Balewadi Tennis Complex courts, here on Monday.

On a day that belonged to India, 25-year-old Yuki Bhambri fought off Japan’s Kaichi Uchida 6-2, 7-5. Victory also meant that the India No. 1, who gave skipped the tournament last year, continued from where he left off in 2015 when he emerged champion.

Ranked 137 on the Tour, Yuki was hardly troubled by qualifier Uchida in the first set. However in the second, Yuki found himself 1-4 in arrears. Holding himself, Yuki fought back to turn the match in his favour.

Earlier, in the day Sumit Nagal put an end to Austria Lucas Miedler 7-6 (7-1), 6-0 and ‘lucky loser’ N Prashant made best use of  the opportunity to end wild card and upcoming Aryan Goveas 6-3, 6-4 in an all-Indian clash.

Haryana-born Sumit led India’s joy against an opponent that was near-equal on rankings. The Austrian at 326 was two places in advantage. The 20-year old Indian impressed initially by serving the 2nd game at ‘love’ to level 1-1, but then allowed the Austrian to inch back and complete the first set winning the tie-breaker (7-1).

The second set was a Sumit show all the way leaving the Austrian blank.

Later, the experienced N Prashant, playing for the third year, put aside 19-year-old Mumbai-base Aryan Goveas, who was playing his first-ever ATP Challenger Tour tournament. “It’s my third year in Pune. I enjoy playing here,” said Prashant who was a doubles semifinalist last year. His entry into the Round 2 (Pre quarterfinals) is his second in a row.

Top seeded Slovenian Blaz Kavčič  got through his round against Geoffey Blancaneaux (France) 6-4, 6-4 in an outside (Court-1) face-off, while No. 2 A Menendez Maceiras of Spain showed qualifier Borna Gojo (Croatia) the door 6-2, 6-3.
